About The Tournament

An initial mailing of the league kit went out to many YABA associations in June 2001.  YABA made an initial intent to have only two divisions for 12 and above (Boys’ and Girls’ Handicap).  Many individuals were concerned.  We are thus taking a step back.  We are going back to the original four divisions for 12 and above (Boys’ and Girls’ Handicap and Scratch).  The major item that is new and will change is where athletes will advance after the state/provincial/ zone finals.  The Handicap Division winners will still advance to the 2002 Coca-Cola Youth Bowling Championships International Finals and the Scratch Division winners will now advance to the 2002 Junior Gold National Championships.

The Coca-Cola Youth Bowling Championships, sponsored by Coca-Cola USA® and conducted by the Young American Bowling Alliance, is an opportunity for your area's athletes to become involved in the premier international tournament for youth bowlers.  To date, the Coca-Cola Youth Bowling Championships has awarded over $2,165,000 in scholarships, through the Scholarship Funds Program and the International Finals.  It is estimated that at least $255,000 in scholarships will be awarded this season through the State/Provincial/Zone competitions.  By conducting the league level competition you are giving your bowlers an opportunity to help finance their education.

The Coca-Cola Youth Bowling Championships begins at the league level.  The tournament is a benefit of membership to all YABA Youth Division sanctioned bowlers (no longer an upper age limit of 21).  For just being a member of YABA, athletes receive the opportunity to:

2.  Competition is open to all 2001-2002 YABA Youth Division sanctioned members.  To compete, bowlers must be regular members of a sanctioned league and not be under suspension at the time of qualifying.  Members must reside in the United States, Canadian provinces, Puerto Rico, and/or the U.S. military commands in the European, Far Eastern and Caribbean zones.  Intercollegiate Bowling Program members are eligible, if they are 2001-2002 YABA Youth Division members and have not violated YABA Rule 400.

3.  League level competition is a benefit of all YABA membership and has no entry fee.  Bowling centers having 2001-2002 sanctioned YABA programs are automatic league level qualifying sites.

4 Participants must be aware of each competition level in the state/province/zone and all associated rules, fees and deadlines.

5 Competition will be conducted in six divisions based on the participant’s age as of August 1, 2001.  Participation in the wrong age division will lead to automatic disqualification.  The divisions are:

Handicap divisions based on 90% of 200

6.  The qualifying window average will be the current league average as of the first date of competition (no minimum number of games).  Participants in the 12 to 21 age divisions must choose either the handicap or scratch division before qualifying.  These athletes must be asked personally on their choice of division.  He or she must remain in that division for the duration of that window.  Bowlers are eligible to compete in a different division in a different league.

7.  Qualifying in the handicap divisions will be based on 90% of the difference between the bowler's average and 200.  This will not affect the league's regular handicap system used to figure team and individual standings in that league. YABA earned awards are based on the member's league average as of that day.

8.  League level qualifying will be conducted in sanctioned leagues during the qualifying window(s) between October 1, 2001 and February 28, 2002.  Each state/provincial/zone tournament committee decides the qualifying window dates.  Consult state/provincial/zone rules for the specific dates.  If needed, the state/ provincial/zone tournament director can grant changes in the qualifying dates to individual bowling centers.

9 Qualifying scores must be bowled during regularly scheduled league play.  Pre-bowled or post-bowled scores are not allowed.  Advancement to the next competition level will be from the league level.

10  Participants can qualify in any state/province/zone where they hold a 2001-2002 YABA Youth Division sanction card.

11.

  1. Each state/provincial/zone committee has decided the advancement ratio for each division to advance to the next competition level (consult the state/provincial/zone rules).  Advancers remain in the division they qualified in during the league level in all subsequent competition.  If there is a tie for the last place qualifier in a division, both will advance to the next level of competition.
  2. In the event a bowler qualifies in more than one league in the same division, the bowler must advance from the league in which the highest series was bowled.  For identical qualifying scores, the member will advance from the league where the first score was bowled.
  3. If a bowler qualifies in different leagues from both scratch and handicap divisions, the bowler must choose one division they will compete in before subsequent competition.
  4. If the bowler advances out of league level in more than one state/province/zone, the bowler Must declare one state/province/zone to continue competing in before the next competition level.
  5. Participation in any level of competition past the league level in more than one state/province/zone will result in automatic disqualification.
12.  At the state/provincial/zone competition, the top bowler in the 12 and above Boys’ and Girls’ Handicap Division with the highest scratch score plus applicable handicap and bonus pins, and any additional berths per division, will win an expense-paid trip* to the Coca-Cola Youth Bowling Championships international finals July 2002 in Winter Haven, FL (date to be determined).  (YABA determines the additional berths disbursed to applicable divisions based on participation.)  Participants in the 11 and under divisions do not advance to the international finals.

13 The top bowler in the 12 and above Boys’ and Girl’s Scratch Division at the state/provincial/zone competition with the highest scratch score, plus applicable bonus pins, will earn a berth to the USA Junior Gold National Bowling Championships July 2002 in Winter Haven/Lakeland, FL (date to be determined).  To receive the berth, the bowler must be a Junior Gold program member, or be eligible for membership (males must have an average of 175 or higher and females a 165 or higher) and obtain membership prior to the championships.

14. Finalists advancing out of the 12 and above Boys’ and Girls’ Handicap Divisions from their state/ provincial/zone level are eligible for either Division I or II at the international finals. These finalists will be ranked by their rerated average in their respective gender category.  Divisions I and II are created by the split at the middle rerated average point.  Finalists will then only compete against those in their respective division.

15. Finalists must agree to bowl in the international finals, or, failing to do so, agree to waive all rights.  If the finalist does not attend the international finals, the state/provincial/zone tournament director may withdraw the state/provincial/zone scholarship won by the finalist.  Replacements will be selected based on the order of finish in their division at the state/provincial/zone level.  Replacements will incur all costs associated with changing the airline ticket, if applicable.

16 The entering average for athletes at the Coca-Cola international finals may be rerated if the finalist's average at the state/provincial/zone competition was more than 10 pins higher than his or her year-end average.  The state/provincial/zone competition average is figured from the first six scratch games bowled.  Previous National Junior Bowling Championships or Coca-Cola Youth Bowling Championships competition averages will also be used in figuring the entering average at the 2002 international finals.

17.  Failure to abide by any rules and regulations will lead to disqualification from this event.  The Coca-Cola Youth Bowling Championships International Tournament Committee reserves the right to accept or reject any participant.

18. The Coca-Cola Youth Bowling Championships International Tournament Committee will decide all matters not covered by these rules and regulations, YABA or ABC/WIBC rules and regulations.  All decisions are final.

* YABA bowlers representing the European, Far Eastern, and the Caribbean zones in the international finals must pay their travel expenses to the continental United States.  YABA will pay remaining travel expenses from their point of continental U.S. entry to the tournament site.
